Luke is a big, fluffy, sensitive pup. He was born 7/26/20 in a large puppy mill in Missouri, so sadly he has some extra baggage. He gets stressed relatively easily when not medicated. He currently takes 3 different medications for anxiety and excessive hyperarousal. His guardian has been training under the direction of a licensed veterinary behaviorist and a certified canine behavior trainer since May 2021. Luke needs a home where someone can be with him all hours of the day and night to continue his training until he is comfortable being alone for normal periods of time. It is imperative his home must not have small pets, kittens/cats, children under 13, older and/or less-tolerant dogs, and fragile-bodied humans. He has not been exposed to farm animals. He must have his own fenced-in yard (no e-collars and/or invisible fences). Luke currently exhibits some territorial aggression. He is sensitive to his surroundings, especially at home in his current environment. Since Luke does not like visitors (even if he knows them well), foot traffic should be minimal to none with professional training and management, to prevent escalation if desired. Outside, he enjoys sniffing, find-it games, playing tug, and chasing rabbits, squirrels, and feral cats. He likes attention but usually not for long. Luke prefers to lay on cool surfaces; he is heat sensitive. To maintain mental health, he must have opportunities to explore outside his home base often or he will get bored and destructive; a home with at least one active human is best. Because of his anxiety, Luke needs someone who doesn’t use a strong hand; he thrives with positive reinforcement/fear-free training. He is currently bathed and brushed by his owner (with LOTS of rewards) because he is sensitive and still needs work on desensitizing. Brushing is 1x per week on average and 2-4x per week when he’s blowing his coat (spring and fall). Bathing is only as needed; he used to hate water, so it’s a work in progress. His coat remains soft with a daily fish oil supplement. His daily dry food is either Orijen Six Fish or Zignature Kangaroo. He takes his meds inside a couple of tablespoons of wet food. He is sensitive to chicken and pork, so avoidance is best. His nails are trimmed monthly on average. Luke does suffer from an abnormal gait; his hips show laxity, and his rear hocks pop outward as he walks. Overall, Luke needs a guardian who will continue his training and refreshers often throughout the rest of his life, and luckily, he is food motivated. Outside of the home setting, Luke gets along with most dogs and humans, but is still unpredictable around children and some adults, especially if they are active, loud, or don’t know how to interact properly with dogs. There is still so much life left in Luke, and he has great potential with the right experienced owner. He is a loyal companion and a real charmer! If you meet all the criteria and can accept his baggage, he would love to meet you! If you would like to meet this dog please call Teri at 630-897-7454. The adoption fee is $225.
